Artist Statement
My name is Raven. I am an artist intrigued by the serene and the mysterious. My work explores themes often shrouded in the shadows of death, gore, and the allure of the night. When I’m not evoking a sense of mystery, I delve into the beauty of nature, inspired by forests, oceans, and the peaceful, quiet nature of animals.
In my sculptural ceramics, I embrace a hand-built approach that enhances the soft, tactile quality of my creations. Each piece is a testament to clay’s transformative power, as it evolves in my hands into sculptures that challenge conventional notions of beauty. Instead, I celebrate an alternative aesthetic that is both soft and raw, reflecting the imperfect and the handmade. Through my artistry, I invite viewers to confront the darker aspects of existence while also finding peace in the unconventional beauty I strive to create.
Artist Biography
Raven (he/him/she/her) is a ceramic artist with a deep love for storytelling through her sculptures. Her artistic journey began with painting, inspired by her aunt’s early encouragement, which sparked a lifelong love for creativity. Over time, her passion evolved into working with clay, a medium that allows her to fully explore her ideas and bring them to life in three-dimensional forms. For Raven, art has become a way to express herself and connect with the world around her.
Raven's work reflects two sides of her personality and creativity. On one hand, she’s drawn to the mysterious and gothic—dark fantasy, skulls, death, and the beauty of nighttime inspire her. On the other hand, she illustrates the calm and gentle moments of nature, capturing the playful and serene side of wildlife, flowers, trees, forests, and the ocean. For her, clay is the perfect medium to explore these contrasts, allowing her to blend bold, dramatic elements with scenes that evoke quiet beauty and tranquillity.
Raven attended three colleges, each playing a unique role in her personal and professional journey. She began with Fine Arts Foundations at Fanshawe College, followed by a fast-tracked Diploma in Hairstyling at St. Clair College, and finally completed a Certificate in Ceramics at Fleming College. Her studies in ceramics marked the beginning of her pursuit to express herself through her art and work toward building a meaningful career.
